Jesse Mercer - Medical Update
Posted Sunday, March 28, 2010 05:22 PM

Just got off of the phone with Scott Blankinship..... Scott and Carol Blankinship were in touch with Jesse Mercer and were trying to set it up for Jesse to come to the reunion when they found that Jesse has been in the hospital with congestive heart failure, he is resting at his home now and is feeling better.  He has lost over 20 lbs and is going to have to change his diet but hopefully he will be ok.  The doctors drained over 6 liters of fluid from around his heart.  The doctors have told him that he does not want him to travel until he has his meds stabilized.  I am not sure if we will see Jesse at the reunion, only time will tell if he will be able to travel by then.  Scott says that if he (Jesse) can come they will stop by Elizabethtown and pick him on their way down, but if not they will stop by on their way back to Alrlington to see him and report back to us.

I know that Jesse would love to hear from all of you.  I think that email will be more appropriate for now and then I will check with Jesse and see if he wants me to publish his phone number.  Please let Jesse know that he is in our hearts and in our prayers.

Yes. Just got out Sat. evening. Was in for congestive heart failure. I have to stay close because the Dr. is monitoring my medications, also diet. Life without salt or other sodium is a bit of a problem since Americans salt so heavily. I have to cook most of what I eat to insure very low sodium content. The maximum allowance per day is less than a teaspoon full. No more eating out or fast food, so until all of this gets regulated and my Dr. says I can, I won't be going anywhere. Not being able to breathe is for the birds.

I really hate to miss this one, because there are people I really would like to see. but it's impossible. Do give my regards to everyone. Please keep me posted on things.

A happy Easter to you both, Jess

PS. Was going to call you, but couldn't find a phone no. for you.

Jess,

Scott Blankinship tells me that you were in the hospital recently. Is this very recent or before we talked about you coming to reunion?
How are you feeling??

Sir, hope you are doing well. Gene Vincent is coming from Texas  and I am meeting him in Durham to bring him. I know we wish you well and can attend the reunion.  I know how hard it is for a low sodium diet. i am a nurse and I have been on oneto loose weight. I am on weight watches and ii eat a lot of the progresso soups. I have a hard time giving up diet drinks and now try mostly water and add lemon. We will keep you in our prayers and hope you are well enough to come. I know if you don't you will get pictures  of the event. I'll dedicate a cymbal crash just for you,if Lt. Ferguson gives me the finger!! Best wishes, Ken.

Just talked to Scott Blankinship today and he said that Jesse will not be able to make it to the reunion.  He spent another 3 days in the hospital since our last update and the doctors have not been able to get his meds balanced.  They took another 5-6 liters of fluid from around his heart.  says he feels better but doctors orders are doctors orders.  I am sure that he would enjoy hearing from anyone who would like to leave him message here, or just go to his profile and send him an email.

I will advise you more when I get anything new.

(exert from email received from Scott Blankinship)

Randy...oops sorry, Colonel,

Carol and I had a very nice visit with Jesse Mercer.  He seemed quite well and showed little signs of recently coming out of the hospital. He said since his last stint in there, he has felt quite well, and his breathing had been so much better. We gave him the card everyone signed along with a separate note from Billy Lewis and told him about the reunion. He really missed being there.  I discussed the Maxton regional reunion, and he was very interested in it and said he would try to go.  We took him to lunch, and he was able to get around quite easily.  As a matter of fact, he drove us to the restaurant.  We stayed with him for about two hours.  It was great seeing him again.

All the best,

Scott
