Selma – Raymond "Ray" E. Earp, Jr., age 64, died Tuesday evening. Born February 28, 1949 in Wake County, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Raymond E. Earp, Sr. Ray was a graduate of the McCallie School, Carolina Military Academy, and he received a B.S. degree from Campbell University. He was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield.

Ray served as a volunteer firefighter with the Thanksgiving Volunteer Fire Department for over thirty years, and he served as the Fire Chief for approximately twenty years. His active involvement in civic endeavors was evidenced by his service as a member of the Smithfield-Selma Senior High School Advisory Council for over twenty years. He also received the Raleigh Jaycees' Award for Community Service and the National Steeplechase Association's Monk Nolan Award in connection with his help in making the Brookhill Steeplechase an annual signature steeplechase event in the Triangle. Ray was the co-owner of Brookhill Farms and was the President of Soil Works, Inc.

Ray is survived by his wife of thirty-nine years, Nancy Crews Earp; son, Raymond "Chip" Earp and wife Caroline of Clayton, NC; daughter, Leah Hodge and husband Lee of New Bern, NC; and two grandchildren, Reid Hodge and Mary Katherine Hodge, both of New Bern, NC. He is also survived by his sister, Mary "Winkie" Worley of Selma, NC.

The family will receive friends at their home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2013. A graveside burial service will be held at the cemetery of Thanksgiving Baptist Church at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, August 9, 2013. A memorial service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield at 11:00 a.m. following the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Duke Heart Center, C/o Sean Sondej, Box 3943, Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC 27710, or Centenary United Methodist Church, 140 E. Market Street, Smithfield, NC 27577.

David McGirt (1968)

Ray has been a lifelong friend. . . just the best.  There is absolutely nothing about Ray's passing that improves this world.  It is impossible to fathom.  What a huge, huge loss to me personally and to all who knew him.
