FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Kathryn Gibson Bundy, 94, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, in Haymount Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at 11a.m. in Haymount United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Goodwin and the Rev. Woody Wells officiating. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street. The family will receive friends in the commons room at the church an hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Kay grew up in Ridgewood, N.J., the daughter of the late Earl and Vera Gibson. Kay graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science degree and was a member of Lambda Chapter of Kappa Delta Sorority. Her major was in group work in the field of sociology. She worked on the staff of Chicago Commons Settlement House.

In 1955, she moved to Fayetteville, with her husband, Dr. James Bundy, and their three children, Peter, Cynthia and J.D. They joined Haymount United Methodist Church in 1956. As president of the church's Women's Society of Christian Service, Kay became involved with the Fayetteville unit of Church Women United becoming its president in 1977. She served four years until 1981. During this period, Church Women United annually held its three worship celebrations of World Day of Prayer, May Fellowship Day and World Community Day. It also had study groups that held Bible studies, considered other religions, and the problems of migrant workers and their children. Kay was Layperson of the Year in 1987 for Haymount United Methodist Church and a historian for the church until 2010. She was a lifetime member of Town & Country Garden Club.

On May 9, 1984, Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. awarded Kay Bundy a certificate of appreciaton for outstanding citizen involvement and for exemplary volunteer service to her community and the State of North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James B. Bundy; brother, Stewart Gibson; and sister, Janet Sharp.

Mrs. Bundy is survived by her sons, Peter Thomas Bundy and wife Emily of Winston-Salem, and J.D. Bundy and wife Donna of Fayetteville; daughter, Cynthia Bundy Scott and husband Roger of Fayetteville; sister, Virginia Stieglitz of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Faith Parese, Heather Ryan, Courtney Williams, Denise Stubbler, David Ojeda, Dionna Bundy, Gabrielle Bundy and Jessica Bundy; and nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville, NC 28303.
