HICKORY - Charles Michael Hoover, 62, of Hickory, passed away on Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. Born March 15, 1948, in Catawba County, he was the son of Virginia Sain Hoover and the late Charles R. (Red) Hoover. Mr. Hoover was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during Vietnam. He was self-employed, a sports enthusiast and an avid golfer. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an aunt, Nellie Ruth Sain. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Stephenson Hoover of the home; mother, Virginia Sain Hoover of Hickory; sister, Martha H. Stamey of Hickory; brother, Morris (Rusty) Hoover of Lincolnton; nephew, Jonathan Stamey of Hickory; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Loretta Stephenson of Hickory; uncle and aunt, J.W. and Lois Sain of Maitland, Fla.; cousins, Gail Gilliland of Hickory, Marilyn Bell and husband, Jack, of Jamestown, Angela Bordelon and husband, John, of Garner; brother-in-law, James Gregory Stephenson and wife, Tanya, of Catawba; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Stephenson Hilliard and husband, Carroll, of Catawba; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Keck officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. A private family interment will be held prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 N. Center St., Hickory, N.C. 28601; or Jason Ray Memorial Transplant Fund, c/o UNC Center for Transplant Care, 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514.
