Shortly before he died, I rode down to Maxton one day and had a really nice visit with "Sarge."
We sat in his living room and I was amazed to hear him count off the names and hometowns of countless cadets. He was very interested in hearing news of the guys I had kept up with, and shared a wealth of information on people I asked about.
Fred was a very kind man to all of us. He was like the "favorite uncle" to everybody at CMA. I'm sure he gave us a new can of Kiwi or Brasso sometimes when there was not money in our accounts.
I don't know exactly when Sarge died, but it would have probably been sometime in the '80's.
